BIOGRAPHY
Justine Abigail Yu (she/her) is a communications and marketing strategist who has worked with organizations operating in North America, Central America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. Her expertise lies in growing enterprises from the ground up through strategic digital marketing, compelling storytelling, and genuine community engagement through a lens of anti-oppression.
She is also the founder of Living Hyphen, a community and multimedia platform that explores the experiences of living in between cultures as a hyphenated Canadian – that is, an individual who calls Canada home but who has roots elsewhere. She is an award-winning workshop facilitator whose work with Living Hyphen has been featured on national and local media outlets including the Toronto Star, the Globe & Mail, CTV National News, and the CBC. She was named a “Changemaker” by the Toronto Star in October 2021.

ABOUT LIVING HYPHEN
Living Hyphen is a community that explores the experiences of hyphenated Canadians. From the Haitian-Quebecois commuting along the Montréal Métro to the South Asian trans man applying for permanent residency, from the young Filipino-Canadian woman texting her immigrant mother to the Plains Cree and Métis man meeting a traditional healer, Living Hyphen reveals the rich inner lives of Canada’s diverse communities.
Living Hyphen publishes a magazine and hosts a podcast featuring the voices of artists and writers all across Canada. Some of their stories were even adapted into a stage play in downtown Toronto. Throughout the years, they have partnered with different organizations to produce multimedia artifacts to amplify diverse voices across multiple intersections of identity.
Living Hyphen’s work also centres around cultural programming aimed at cultivating courageous and tender storytelling within racialized communities. Through writing and art, Living Hyphen uncovers what it means to live in between cultures as individuals who call “Canada” home but with roots elsewhere. Their stories are beautiful, heartbreaking, uplifting, contradictory, and constantly unfolding.
Living Hyphen’s aim is to reshape the mainstream and to turn up the volume on voices that often go unheard.
